The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class hasn’t even landed in showrooms here in America yet, but Mercedes knows people are impatient—so they’re whetting our appetite for the S-Class by dropping the new 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC on us. All 577 horsepower of it.
If you don’t follow Mercedes-Benz closely, that word “4MATIC” at the end of the new AMG’s name might throw you for a loop. 4MATIC is Benz-speak for all-wheel-drive—like the 2014 E63 AMG here in the States, the new S63 AMG will come strictly in all-wheel-drive form. (In the case of AMGs, the AWD is specially performance-tuned with a rearward power bias, so donuts and drifts are still in the cards.) So no more epic burnouts, sadly, but it should mean pretty much every other aspect of performance is improved over the outgoing S63 AMG…especially considering the 2014 model is 220 pounds lighter and even more gutsy.
For 2014, the 5.5 liter twin-turbo V8 that we at RIDES love has been punched up to 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque for 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC duty. Between the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the hearty V8, and the AWD, Mercedes-Benz says the latest AMG S-Class does 0-60 in 3.9 seconds and runs up to a top speed of 186 mph. When the road gets twisty, AMG Adaptive sport suspension helps keep the car level and on track, while multi-mode variable-ratio steering makes driving either a breeze or a blast depending on whether it’s in Comfort or Sport. High-performance two-piece brakes haul all that S-Class mass down to a stop when the time comes; there’s even an optional carbon-ceramic set, if you’re into that.
And of course, it wouldn’t be an AMG Mercedes if it didn’t look boss, so the 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC scores 19-inch standard-issue light forged-alloy wheels—but you’ll want to spring for the optional 20-inchers instead. It also gets AMG-specific styling tweaks that give the S-Class extra visual panache without going OTT—if you wanna go wild, though, we’re sure all kinds of aftermarket companies will be offering body kits for this ride before you know it. And like all new 2014 S-Classes, the S63 AMG 4MATIC’s interior is second to none—just see our previous post on the new S-Class for the jealousy-inducing details.
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4MATIC hits U.S. showrooms in November, but if you really want one, we say get your order in now. That way you’ll have it by Christmas at the latest. Mercedes hasn’t named a price yet, but we’d say if you’re planning on paying cash, fill that Pelican case with at least $150,000. [Shout-out to Mercedes-Benz!]
